In the aftermath of the Tsunami that hit Phuket on the 26.12.04, members of the Lions Club of Phuket Andaman Sea decided to be involved in a longer term project to help the victims of the tragedy. Helping Children in need became the main objective of the Club, and the idea of creating a village slowly became to grow. The fund raising began in earnest and the response was overwhelming. The Lions Club decided to contact “Child Watch Phuket”, a local organization in excess of 10 years experience in child care and protection. Child Watch Phuket was pleased to join forces with the Lions Club of Phuket Andaman Sea to bring the project to reality, and run it for years to come. It was agreed to set up an independent Foundation with directors from the Lions Club of Phuket Andaman Sea and Child Watch Phuket. Thus on the 17th of August 2005, the “Phuket Sunshine Village Foundation” was officially set and legally recognized by the Thai authorities. Our Foundation was fortunate to subsequently secure an agreement with the French Red Cross, who financed and managed the construction of the village buildings. After the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony on the 5.05.2006, construction started. The Village was completed after one year and officially opened on the 29.06.07. by the Governor of Phuket. After running for more than five years, the Village is now home to over 120 Children in need from Phuket and surrounding provinces.
Sports Complex Project
Two years ago the Phuket Sunshine Village acquired a piece of land located adjacent to the village. This purchase was motivated by the growing need of playing space for the children. When the village opened 5 years ago, around 44 children were being taken care of, most of them being relatively young. Nowadays the village is at full capacity with over 120 children living there on a full time basis. Many of the children are now in the 8 to 14 years age group which means their energy levels require much more space for their activities.
It is now necessary for the foundation to make good use of the extra piece of land. This means we need to raise funds to develop what is today a muddy patch of mud into a safe playground. Then the children of the Phuket Sunshine Village will be able to practice both outdoor & indoor activities. The Sports Complex project includes the building of a large covered area which will protect the children from both the scorching heat and the monsoon rains. This area will be fitted out with popular indoor sports activities such as basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, and football.
The Sports Complex which will include a raised stage and seating area for hosting events such as celebrations, shows, theater performances etc. In addition to the covered area, we also intend to have an outside playing field with landscaping on the edges to provide natural shade from trees. A vegetable growing area is also planned where children will be able to learn how to grow their own food.
The final budget estimate is:
Phase 1: Sports Complex 400 sqm (roof, metallic structure and tartan floor): 3,500,000 THB
Phase 2: Sports Equipment: 500,000 THB
Phase 3: Landscaping: 500,000 THB
Total estimated cost is 4,500,000 THB (125,000 Euro)
Fundraising
Since our call for help following the Tsunami on 26.12.2004, we have been blessed with the generous response from people and organizations worldwide, to whom we are very grateful. Without this outpour of generosity the Phuket Sunshine Village would not have been possible.
To this day, our Foundation still 100% depends on private donations is not affiliated to any large N.G.O and does not get subsidies from any official government body. This is why our fundraising is a continuous effort, to insure a long and uninterrupted operation of the village.
Besides the normal fundaising we do to keep our village running we are now asking you to please help us with funds to support the new sports complex, which is so important to our children! There are two ways you can help to realize this project:
- A donation in cash, by bank transfer or online donation.
- Buy a raffle ticket for the charity raffle activity of the Lions Club of Phuket Andaman Sea.
The full amount of each ticket (1,000 THB) will go the construction of the planed sports complex. Many valuable prizes, like 2 weeks accommodation in 3 different hotels in Phuket, are available. The drawing of the raffle tickets will be on the 31.03.2013.
